Before the Day of Surgery

Questions Before Surgery?

Please call Park Lane Dental Specialists if you are unsure about fasting, medications, transportation, illness, or appointment timing before your procedure.

If you need to change or cancel your appointment, please provide 48-hour notice whenever possible.

Important Pre-Operative Instructions

  1. Fasting: Patients undergoing anesthetic are not permitted to eat or drink after midnight on the day of surgery. This includes chewing gum and candy.
  2. Alcohol and smoking: Do not drink alcoholic beverages, including beer or wine, for 24 hours before your surgery. Do not smoke the morning of your surgery.
  3. Medications: Patients can take their usual medication, except diabetic medication, with small sips of water. The consulting doctor and/or nurse will advise you.
  4. Blood thinners: Blood thinner medications, including Warfarin, Pradaxa, Eliquis, Heparin, and Xarelto, must be overseen by your family physician when considering whether to stop medication for the procedure. This helps prevent excessive bleeding. Exceptions are Aspirin (ASA) and Plavix, which do not need to be stopped prior to surgery.
  5. If you become ill: Please call the office if the patient develops a cold, fever over 38C, cough, runny nose, or chest congestion so we can determine whether the appointment should be rescheduled.
  6. Clothing and personal items: Do not wear tight clothing on the day of the appointment. A short sleeve t-shirt is preferred. Please bring a case for eyeglasses, contact lenses, and/or dentures. Leave valuables, including money and jewelry, at home.
  7. Prepare before arrival: Please shower prior to surgery and remove all make-up and nail polish.
  8. Cell phones: Cell phone use is not permitted in the operatory. Cell phones must be off or on silent mode during surgery.
  9. Transportation: You must not drive a vehicle or operate heavy machinery for 24 hours following sedation or anesthetic. Arrangements must be made in advance for an adult, 18 years of age or older, to accompany you home.
  10. Consent: You will be required to sign a surgical consent form before your surgery. Patients under the age of 16 must be accompanied by their parent or guardian to sign consent for the procedure, unless married.
  11. Appointment changes: If unforeseen circumstances require you to change or cancel your appointment, please provide the office with 48-hour notice.
  12. Confirmation call: Patients will be called 1 or 2 days prior to scheduled surgery to remind and confirm the appointment. A message will be left on answering machines or voicemail if the patient cannot be reached. Please call the office back to confirm the appointment.
